Summer Stars Reading Adventure
Newbridge Library is delighted to announce details of this year’s Summer Stars national reading challenge for children. It starts on Monday, 15th June and will run until the end of August. We would be very grateful if you could share details of this programme amongst your pupils and their parents and hopefully encourage them to join in the adventure and to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading and writing over the summer. Summer Stars is non-competitive and every child who reads even one book is regarded as having participated – and it’s all completely free!
How to take part:
All children are invited to take part and non-library members can register for library membership online for free at https://www.librariesireland.ie/join-your-library.
Children can use the attached printable reading card to track the books they have read as part of the challenge. However, there is no target number of books to read. The emphasis is on participation and every child who reads even one book is regarded as having completed the programme
Borrowing Books from the Library
As part of the phased reopening of public library services, Newbridge Library is currently operating a Contact and Collect Service. Borrowers can call or email the library and request up to 5 items (books, DVDs, games, magazines and more!) and then pick them up from the library at an allotted time. The items picked will be based on the tastes and interests that the borrower outlines to the staff member in their initial call or email.
We hope to extend this service in the coming weeks, in line with public health advice, and to be able to open our doors for patrons to come into the library again and select their own books.
Newbridge Library’s contact details for the Call and Collect service are (045) 906130 and firstname.lastname@example.org.
E-Books and E-Audiobooks on Borrowbox
Browse, borrow, read and listen to the Summer Stars collection of children’s e-books and e-audio books through the library’s BorrowBox app. This is free for all members to use from anywhere, anytime. Non-members can join online for free at https://www.librariesireland.ie/join-your-library.
Rewards and Incentives
There will be a certificate for participation awarded to every child who participates in the challenge and reads at least one book as part of it. These will be presented at the end of the summer. We also have a number of competitions with great prizes up for grabs:
Short Story Competition:
As well as enjoying the amazing worlds of books, Summer Stars is also celebrating children’s imaginations by running a short story competition with the theme of An Unexpected Adventure. There are three age categories with great prizes (including tablets and vouchers) for all the winners and runners-up. Please find attached a poster with more information on this competition.
Book Review Competition:
We would love to receive book reviews from any of the children who participate, and these will be entered into a ‘Book Review of the Week’ competition with some great prizes up for grabs. Please email entries to email@example.com with your name and age, and a short review of the book you have read and how many stars you would award it out of 5.
Online Storytime and Events:
Summer Stars story time will be delivered by Kildare library staff and Irish authors including chapter-a-day readings from books. We will also have a host of other fun and interactive online events. These will be made available through Kildare Library Services’ social media pages. Keep an eye on the following channels for updates –
